Dovilė Zelčiūtė was born in Kaunas in 1959 to a family of distinguished actors and for this reason her work has always been connected to the theatre. She is a poet, playwright, and essayist and has published 19 books in various genres. Her writing has been translated into Russian, English, Swedish, Bulgarian, Polish, German, and French. Her poetry has been honoured with several literary awards, the most notable being the Salomėja Nėris Proze (2004, for the poetry collection November Exercises), the Kaunas Association of Artists Prize (2009, for the book Mistaken Movements and for her work with Lithuanian photographers in the following year, connecting her words to their images), the Kaunas Municipality Arts and Culture Prize (2015, for the books Touch My Hand and After Rehearsal), as well as the Jonas Aistis Prize and the One Lita Prize (both in 2019, for the poetry book Haven Cities). She has written plays and has published a book of interviews with eminent theatre people and photographers, as well as several essays on the same topic. In 2006, in cooperation with Algimantas Aleksandravičius, she published Stations, a bilingual book of poetry and photographs. In 2020 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of the order of Merits to Lithuania.
